Spearfishing areas in Lanzarote

As we have already mentioned, there are a number of areas in Lanzarote that are designated for spearfishing. In total there are three areas that can be visited by lovers of this sport:

  1. mala: exactly between Punta Pasito and Punta Tierra Negra.

  2. Playa Quemada: between Punta Tiñosa and Punta Papagayo.

  3. Playa del Cochino: from Punta Jurado to Punta La Gaviota.

Each of the three areas presents a great challenge for the fisherman, but the Mala area stands out as one of the most challenging areas, requiring fishing at great depths and typically free diving. The second, Playa Quemada, is a less rich area in terms of fish species. To reach the third, it is advisable to go by boat.

 

License to spearfish in Lanzarote

If you are interested in spearfishing, you need an appropriate fishing license. It is also very important that it is valid. Nowadays, the procedures to apply for this license can be carried out in person at the relevant administrative offices or online. 

In addition, a fee is payable, which depends on the type of license applied for (first, second or third class).

 

Are there rules for spearfishing in Lanzarote?

It is important that you know and comply with the regulations for spearfishing in Lanzarote.

  • Spearfishing is prohibited outside the designated areas.

  • It is not possible to catch forbidden species such as black drum or goldentail moray eels. 

  • The sale of caught species is prohibited.

  • The allowed catch material is the harpoon. A special knife can also be used for this type of fishing.

  • Spearfishing license must be in force.

 

What species can we find spearfishing in Lanzarote?

As there are different underwater fishing areas in Lanzarote, one can find a wide variety of specimens including mackerel, sardines, sea bass, sea bream, grouper and sea bream.

Regardless of the area chosen, spearfishing is a unique opportunity to get in touch with the island great maritime wealth.
